How do the nutritional gauges work?

To illustrate the nutritional balance of a product, Yuka displays on each product sheet a detailed evaluation using a color-coded gauge for each type of nutrient (calories, saturated fat, sugar, salt, protein, fiber, and fruits or vegetables).

The gauge includes 4 color levels:

  • Dark green;
  • Light green;
  • Orange;
  • Red.

An adverb is associated with each color.

For nutrients to be limited, according to the Nutri-Score (calories, saturated fat, sugar, salt), Yuka associates the following adverbs with the corresponding colors:

  • Dark green: "Low" calories / saturated fat / sugar / salt ;
  • Light green: "Low impact";
  • Orange: "A bit too" caloric / fatty / sugary / salty;
  • Red: "Too" caloric / fatty / sugary / salty.

For nutrients to be encouraged, according to the Nutri-Score (protein, fiber, and fruits or vegetables), Yuka associates the following adverbs with the corresponding colors:

  • Dark green: "Excellent amount" of protein / fiber / fruits / vegetables;
  • Light green: "Some" protein / fiber or "Good quantity" of fruits / vegetables.

The gauges are scaled by numbers, whose maximum values (e.g., 45+ grams for sugar) correspond to those of the Nutri-Score. These values differ for beverages (e.g., 13.5+ grams for sugar) as explained here.
