How do user reviews work?

Reviews of cosmetic products are written by Yuka users. They reflect each person’s own experience: Yuka does not verify them, but every review goes through automatic moderation before it is published.

1. Who can post a review

Any user who has a Yuka account and has scanned the product with the app. Posting a review does not entitle you to anything in return.

Scanning is mandatory: this is how we keep reviews for people who have had access to the product. However, Yuka does not check whether they bought or used it: the content of each review is self-reported by its author.

2. What a review contains

A review includes a star rating and a comment. For some product categories, such as sunscreens or makeup, you can also add photos. Each review is shown with its author’s first name or username, their profile picture if they signed in with Facebook or Google, and its publication date.

Your review is published immediately, as soon as it has passed automatic moderation. It stays online with no time limit, as long as you do not delete it and your account exists. If you delete your account, your reviews are deleted with it.

You can edit or delete your review at any time from the product page. An edited review goes through automatic moderation again.

Other users cannot contact the author of a review, but they can show that they found it helpful with a “Like”.

Reviews written in another language are automatically translated into the language used by the app. The label “Translated automatically. View original” tells you so: tap it to read the original text.

3. How reviews are sorted

By default, reviews are sorted by relevance: yours appears first, followed by those with the most “Likes”. You can also display them from newest to oldest.

4. How reviews are moderated

Before it is published, each review is analyzed by an automatic moderation tool. Reviews that break the rules below are blocked. Our team does not step in before publication, but it examines every reported review and every appeal against a block.

A review is blocked if it contains:

  • profanity, insults or threats;
  • hateful or discriminatory remarks;
  • sexual or violent content;
  • personal data;
  • advertising, links, promo codes or repeated text (spam);
  • content not directly related to the product;
  • illegal content, such as defamation.

If your review is blocked, a message lets you know as soon as you submit it. Think it’s a mistake? Contact us from that screen or write to us at equipe@yuka.io: a member of our team will look at your review again and get back to you.

The same rules apply to all reviews, whether positive or negative.

Yuka never edits the text of a review. However, we remove any review that is not based on personal experience of the product, that was written in exchange for a benefit, or that seeks to promote or disparage a product.

No brand can pay to obtain, edit, hide or delete a review. If a review seems fake to you, report it.

5. How to report a review

A review that breaks these rules or the law may be removed after being reported.

To report a review:

  • in the app: tap “…” next to the review, then explain why you are reporting it;
  • by email, at equipe@yuka.io: tell us which product and review are concerned, and why you are reporting it.

We will send you our decision by email. By reporting a review, you declare in good faith that the information you provide is accurate and complete.

Brands can, in the same way, let us know if they doubt the authenticity of a review, stating their reasons.

If a review is removed following a report, its author is informed by email, with the reason. They can appeal this decision by writing to equipe@yuka.io.

6. Reviews and the Yuka score

The Yuka score, out of 100, is completely independent of reviews: they have no influence on it.

7. The average rating

The average rating is calculated from the ratings of all published reviews. It is updated with every new review, edit or removal.

8. Your data

Your first name or username, your profile picture and the content of your review are public. To find out more, see our Privacy Policy.
