How are penalties calculated in the cosmetic product scores?

The score is calculated based on the health effects and risk levels of the ingredients present in the product.

1) If the product contains only risk-free (green) or low risk (yellow) ingredients:

The product's score will systematically be greater than or equal to 50/100 with the following penalty points:

-10 points for a potential carcinogen or endocrine disruptor at low risk (yellow),

-7 points for an allergen, irritant, other health effect or pollutant at low risk (yellow).

2) If the product contains moderate-risk (orange) or hazardous (red) ingredients:

The ingredient with the highest risk level will determine the product's score rank:

- between 0 and 24/100 if a hazardous ingredient (red) is present,

- between 25 and 49/100 if a moderate risk ingredient (orange) is present.

The other ingredients will result in the loss of a number of points depending on the health or environmental effects and the level of risk, as detailed below:

-12 points for a hazardous (red) carcinogen or endocrine disruptor,

-8 points for a hazardous (red) allergen, irritant, other health effect or pollutant,

-6 points for a potential carcinogen or endocrine disruptor at moderate risk (orange),

-4 points for an allergen, irritant, other health effect or pollutant at moderate risk (orange),

-3 points for a potential carcinogen or endocrine disruptor at low risk (yellow),

-2 points for an allergen, irritant, other health effect or pollutant at low risk (yellow).

If an ingredient presents several risks, the penalty for the highest risk applies.

If the product contains very few ingredients (up to 3), the rankings are lower (because the ingredient at risk represents a proportionally larger share) and the penalty applied is therefore different.
